MONMOUTH DROPS SEASON OPENER 

Monmouth,IL -- The Monmouth College men=s soccer team opened its 1996 fall season at home today with a 2-1 non-conference loss to Illinois Wesleyan University on Bobby Woll Athletic Field. The two teams have met each other ten times with IWU now holding a 5-3-2 series advantage. Monmouth and Wesleyan last hooked up during the 1994 season and the Titans won that match by an identical 2-1 score in Bloomington.

Sophomore Robbie Hepplewhite (Port Elgin, Ontario,Canada/Saugeen District)scored the Fighting Scots
= first goal of the new season on an unassisted shot in the 30th minute of play. Hepplewhite=s tally tied the score at 1-1 midway through the first half and the game remained deadlocked until the 87th minute. A late Titan goal gave the victory to the visitors.

Illinois Wesleyan came out on top despite being out-shot by Monmouth 21-10. Each team attempted 5 corner kicks and was whistled for ten fouls. Junior Jeff Sutton (Alton,IL/Alton) played the whole game at goalie for the Scots. Monmouth (0-1) will look for its first win of the season next Wednesday, September 11 when they host Midwest Conference South Division opponent Illinois College (game time 3:00 PM). Monmouth won both matches against IC last year, including a season-ending 7-1 victory at home.
