Despite placing two runners in the top ten Monmouth was edged by one point for second place at the 1997 league championships, run at Grinnell. The defending champion Fighting Scots received All-Conference efforts from sophomore Jamie Nelson, who finished 6th overall, and senior Frank Schweda (9th) , who earned his third staright top-15 medal. Freshman Tony Miles just missed out on all-league honors with a 17th-place finish.
