Volleyball was the first women's intercollegiate varsity sport at Monmouth and began in the fall of 1974. Midwest Athletic Conference for Women (MACW) Conference tournament competition started in 1978 with a five-team tournament. A separate MACW Southern Division tournament was held from 1983-1987. Full divisional competition started in 1984 and has featured various conference championship tournament formats. The MACW (women) and MCAC (men) conferences merged to form the current Midwest Athletic Conference (MWC) in 1994.
