The Midwest Conference will deviate from its traditional North-South Division format for the 1998-99 season and will play a modified round-robin schedule with 16 league games. The top four teams will advance to the MWC tournament, hosted this year by the top-ranked South Division school. BELOIT defeated LAKE FOREST to win its third league crown in the last four years in 1998 but may face a tough task repeating again this time around after losing several starters to graduation. Lake Forest is the preseason favorite based on returning players and MONMOUTH should be a contender to join the tournament field after last year’s third-place finish with their senior nucleus. ST. NORBERT, which finished third in the North a year ago, returns a talented and experienced group and could be a tournament team. RIPON also suffered heavy graduation losses and will need to find production from younger players to return to the postseason. The other league teams all hope to post winning records and challenge for one of the top four spots by season’s end. With Beloit’s back-to-back title run, teams from the North Division have now won 13 of the last 15 league championship trophies with Grinnell (1991) and Illinois College (1993) the only South champions since 1983.
