Here is also a tool to help you with some of the terms that your son or daughter may use when talking about Greek life and also to help give a better understanding of the terms used on this site

Active - an initiated member of a fraternity or sorority.

Alumna-
a sorority member (feminine) who is no longer in college; plural is alumni

Alumnus- a fraternity member (masculine) who is no longer in college; plural is alumni

Bid - an invitation to join a fraternity or sorority

Brother - a term used by fraternity members when referring to each other

Chapter -a membership unit of a national or international sorority or fraternity

Formal Recruitment-
a series of events given by each sorority or fraternity during a period of time which is schedule and governed by the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council

Fraternity - a Greek organization for men

Exchange - a social gathering for two or more fraternities or sororities.
Greek - a member of a fraternity or sorority

Initiation - ritualistic ceremony during which pledge receive life- long membership privileges

Interfaternity Council (IFC) - the coordinating body of fraternities

Legacy - a potential new member of a fraternity/sorority who is son/daughter, brother/sister, or grandson/granddaughter of a member of a Greek organization

New Member-
one who has been accepted as a probationary member of a group.  After a period of education in the history, ideals, and traditions of the organization, he or she may be initiated to become an active member

Panhellenic Council (PHC) - the coordinating body of sororities

Philanthropy-
a service project undertaken by fraternity and sorority chapters of a campus community, or national level

Potential New Member - a person interested in being a member of a chapter

Ritual - the values and beliefs by which members of an organization live; usually depicted in traditional organizational ceremonies

Recruitment - the activity by which chapters seek new members

Sister - a term used by sorority members when referring to each other

Social/ Exchanges
- a get together with another group for a fun occasions

Sorority - a Greek organization for women
