Students have the right to live and learn in an
environment of peace and acceptance. Harassment jeopardizes the health and welfare of the
College community, undermining our trust in one another and our ability to live harmoniously.
Higher education should not be a reflection of
the larger society where, sadly, we are often reminded of the hate and prejudice that exists
in our world. Rather, higher education should be a community that models the best in our
culture and fosters behaviors that encourage understanding and peace and honors humanity.
We are the fortunate ones, having been
blessed with the resources and opportunity to get a good education. Those of us here today
will be in a position in the future to make ours a better world and we should not tolerate
today behaviors that threaten that responsibility.
