 FINAL EXAMINATION STUDY gUIDE
Last updated 12/6/2016

The Final Exam in COMM 101 will consist of the questions below plus 10 multiple choice "bonus" questions. (The "bonus questions are for 101 textbook evaluation.  They will count 1/2 point each and be added to your total for the 100 point exam items below.) The four short-essay-type questions are to be answered based on the manuscript of a speech I will hand you at the time of the exam, a speech which was given in a college public speaking class much like ours.  You may use one page (8 1/2 x 11") of notes during the exam (open notes) but not your book or any other resources.

Write answers to the following four questions asking you to critically evaluate the speech manuscript distributed at the time of the exam.  In evaluating this speech, assume it was for the persuasive speech assignment like the one you just completed, presented to a college level speech class similar to ours.  Your answer should discuss each of the following issues in SEPARATE SECTIONS AND IN DETAIL.  Label each section.   (100 pts. total)

A).  Identify the thesis and specific purpose of the speech in relation to the audience this speaker faced.  Given what you know of persuasive speeches, are the speaker's choices wise?  (15pts.)

B).  Discuss the organizational strategy of the speech.  What is the thought pattern (name it) and is it effective?  Are the main points appropriate and well-phrased. Does the speaker use transitions and internal summaries well?  Is the introduction effective?  Is the conclusion effective?    (30 pts.)

C).  Discuss and evaluate the use of support material.  List and identify all types of support material used (cite examples) and evaluate the variety and quality of this support and the speaker's sources.   (25 pts.)

D.)  Assume that the speaker made a thoughtful analysis of the audience.  Based on what was said in the speech, indicate the beliefs, the values, and motives the speaker wanted the audience to hold by the end of his presentation.  How effective was his use of the “rational model”  to gain attitude change and perhaps action?   (30 pts.)

REMEMBER:  Your task is to both describe AND evaluate in each section of your answer.  Thus, you should talk about strengths and weaknesses of the speech in each section of your answer in addition to describing.

Final Exam:  Saturday, Dec. 10 at 6:30pm in WH 316
