What To Look For In (Print) Texts

 

  1. Look for use of white space

  2. Look for what's not chosen from possible signs (in the available paradigms) to include

  3. Where is your eye directed first, second, etc?

  4. Look at posture of people or characters.  What is indexed? 

  5. Look at clothing, jewelry, etc.  What is indexed?

  6. Look for gender/power/roles.  How are they indexed?

  7. Read the WORDS (symbols):  type face, "god & devil" terms, location on page?

  8. Look for  ideology (which has to do with status, power, symbols of success, consumerism,) as attempting to form a link to a positive identity appealing to the audience.

  9. What emotional response is sought?

  10. Who does this to appeal to?

  11. Look for oppositions, magic, guilt, fear, sexual images.

  12. How is reader involvement sought/gained?

  13. Look for signs belonging ambiguously to two or more PARADIGMS.
