Six Key Functions of Public Relations


Writing and editing - press releases, video news releases (VNRs), Public Service Announcements (PSAs), internal PR (newsletters, etc.)

Media Relations - spokesperson (like a press secretary), damage control, crisis management

Special Events - Corporate sponsorship, charities, etc. (These often function like good will ads.)

Research - demographic and psychographic (VALS) "audience" (market) analysis

Community and Consumer Relations - e.g. plant tours, corp. museums, blood mobile, quality responses to customer mail, complaints, requests, etc. customer "education" literature

Government Relations - lobbying, building "relationships" with government officials
