Write an examination answer that critically evaluates the
speech I distributed in class. In
evaluating this speech, assume it was for the persuasive speech assignment like
the one you just completed, presented to a college level speech class similar
to ours. Your answer should discuss
each of the following issues in SEPARATE SECTIONS AND IN DETAIL. Label
each section. A). Describe the thesis
and specific purpose of the speech in relation to the
audience this speaker faced. Given what
you know of persuasive speeches, are the speaker's choices wise? (15pts.) B). Discuss the
organizational strategy of the speech.
Is it effective? Be sure to note
what the thought pattern is and indicate in a brief outline the principle parts
of the introduction, the body (main and sub-points) and the conclusion. (In the
outline you don't need to use complete sentences but be clear. Do note transitions and internal summaries
where you see them.) (30 pts.) C). Discuss and
evaluate the use of support material.
Note all types of support material used (cite examples) and
evaluate the variety and quality of this support and the speaker's
sources. Especially, note how well the
three step process is used. (25 pts.) D.) Assume that the
speaker made a thoughtful analysis of
the audience. Based on what was said in
the speech, indicate the beliefs, values, and motives
the speaker wanted the audience to hold by the end of his presentation. How effective do you think his use of the
“rational model” was? (30 pts.) REMEMBER: Your task is to both describe
AND
evaluate in each section of your answer. Thus, you should talk about strengths and weaknesses of the
speech in each section of your answer in addition to describing. BE SURE TO BRING YOUR COPY OF THE SPEECH WITH YOU TO THE
EXAM. You may write any notes you wish
on your copy of the speech and use them (or other notes) during the exam. However, you are to write the exam during
the exam period. Use the paper I
provide at that time. Write in
ink. Use one side of the paper
only. Be concrete in your answer. |
