Discussion Questions - Response Papers Assignment

last updated 1/2/2014

This assignment requires you to write a short response paper on questions related to the readings you have been doing by each date listed on the syllabus.  The questions you should address in your response papers are found on the "Questions page (linked above).  Write your paper addressing those questions highlighted in yellow on the list of discussion questions for the date your paper is due - typically about 2 or 3 questions for each assigned response paper.  If you are confused or wish to change questions, please contact me. )

In your responses, you may write with the assumption that the reader (me) is familiar with the readings and concepts you have just completed.  You should make reference to material covered in the textbook and you may use any other material of good quality as you wish with PROPER CITATION.  Do clearly express your opinions (supported) on the issues raised in the questions and explain why you draw the conclusions you do (refering to the text and other materials for support).  Typical response papers will be in the range of 600-1000 words (3-5 pages).

In EVALUATING your response papers I will consider the following:

  1. Do you directly confront the issues raised in the questions and present a clear position?

  2. Do you engage in some in-depth thought about the issue and avoid superficial or glib arguments.

  3. Do you make use of textbook, course web pages and/or other material to support your responses to the questions?

  4. Are your responses logical (perhaps even insightful) and consistent rather than emotional

I will not evaluate the "correctness" of your views.  You are free to take any position on the questions that makes sense to you as long as you thoughtfully support/justify your position and do so by using (or criticizing) course content materials.
