Challenges

Challenges to the human condition as a result of the topic of suffering is the continued challenge of all peoples of the world to cope with suffering in a positive manner and not in a destructive fashion.  An additional challenge to the human condition resulting from the topic of suffering is the need for all to understand the differing perspectives and philosophies that exist concerning the issue, especially in regards to being able to "agree to disagree."  These philosophies will remain with civilization till the end of time in some form or fashion.  Man is presented with the challenge of coping with the numerous quantities of approaches to the topic of suffering, which is a topic that affects everyone at some point during his life.

Sources of Concern

The topic of suffering does not necessitate any universal sources of concern throughout all of the philosophies.  One source of concern is the blatant dismissal of some philosophies by the educated class of today in favor of more secular or "newer" philosophies to replace those of antiquity that have had such an impact upon the history of philosophy.  Another source of concern that has come up during the examination of the topic of suffering is the need to fully examine the controversial and ethical systems before rash and hasty decisions are made, especially when the division over the topic is as magnanimous as that of embryonic stem cells.

Benefits

The human condition benefits from a discussion on suffering because people are exposed to new and different ways of viewing the world and situations, especially those situations which involve pleasure or pain.  Additionally, such a discussion allows for critical thinking upon a topic that is normally "brushed under the rug."  This discussion allows someone to know better analyze and understand the actions of his fellow man, due to the ability to now comprehend the different aspects of an argument and see them in a different light than many would portray them.
