Transformation:

An organism can get DNA in two different ways. The first way to obtain new DNA is by horizontal transfer.  This occurs during replication of the cells.  DNA is passed down from the mother cell to the daughter cells.  The second way an organism can obtain new DNA is by horizontal transfer.  There are three types of horizontal transfer; conjugation, transfection, and transformation.  For this experiment transformation will be used. Transformation is the idea of transferring DNA from one organism to another.  This is generally done by breaking done the membrane of the cell allowing DNA to move into the cell.  Then the cell membrane is reconstructed and the new DNA is now part of the cell.
