Stem Cells and Me:
Why I Chose The Topic of Stem Cell Research
****************************************************************************************************************************
If I had to choose between doing a science experiment or reading a book on politics, I would definitely choose the latter of the two. I am not a science person. That is just the way it is. But when it comes to the topic of stem cell research, this is not so much the case.
For one, my aunt Janis passed away from Cancer two years ago. She was the most amazing person I have ever known. She was given an Adult Stem Cell Bone Marrow transplant (find more information about in the Human Condition section) which extended her life for years. I am ever grateful for those extra years I was able to spend with my aunt and, as a result, have gained an unquenchable interest in the area of stem cell research.
Stem cell research has always been of interest to me, even before my aunt received the treatment. The reasons for this lie within the huge controversy that surrounds the issue. It fascinates me that so many people are against research that could potentially save countless lives and improve even more. I wanted to learn more about the science behind stem cell research in hopes that I would better understand the opposing point of view- maybe even reevaluate my own. I did accomplish this, but in doing so have also accomplished to strengthen my position on the issue.
