Genetic Therapy/Engineering

Index page- David Bland

This topic is of particular interest to me because I am a biology major considering going into the medical profession.  Genetic therapy and its research provides potential options for debilitating hereditary diseases.  This application of genetic knowledge and technology has enormous ramifications for medical practice and ethics.  Gene therapy deals with improving the human condition via genetic recombination of DNA.  That information is then reinserted into an organism to elicit a specific outcome, usually to compensate for a protein deficiency.

Regardless of an individual's stance on the issue, I believe there should be steps taken to better educate the public on this issue so informed decisions can be made. I would hope that this site and the others within the class provide a resource that people can use to become more knowledgeable on genetic issues.
