| I. English Studies Terminology Choose 5 out of 6 of the terms that I
will take from the extensive list on the syllabus, provide a definition of the
term, and give an example or apply it to a situation to support your definition
(3-5 sentences). (30 points)
II. Research
Answer five fact-based questions about research resources. Some will be
fill-in-the-blank; others will require a short answer. These questions will
test your knowledge of library resources and how to find information pertinent
to literary research. Use the handouts that the librarian gave you and
notes from class discussion to study. In particular, make sure you know
the major databases that English majors use. (10 points)
III. Modes of Criticism
Identify which mode of criticism (mimetic, rhetorical/pragmatic, expressive, objective)
would apply to particular critical statements or descriptions. (10 points)
IV. Close Reading/Analysis of a Poem
Write an analysis of a poem that I provide in which you explain how an author
uses poetic devices to develop a theme. (35 points)
V. Critical Approaches
Choose one of the two critical approaches I list, and in a brief essay explain
the critical perspective and how you would apply it to the poem from part IV. How might
you use one of them to write an essay about the poem from your close reading?
What issues should you attend to from that critical perspective? What issues
from the poem would be important for that type of critic? (15 points)
