Evaluation Criteria    Response to Last Class's Rhetorical Analysis

Write a 2-3 page, typed TEXTUAL analysis of the essay "National IDs Won't Work" by Lorraine Woellert  using steps 1, 3, 4, and 5 of the guidelines on pages 81-83 in GRWCA (you will not need to do the contextual analysis section).  The general guidelines for revision described in chapter 12 might be useful to you as well.

The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate that you know how to read an argument carefully and explain how that argument operates--these are essential skills for writing your own arguments.  The most effective essays will

  • characterize the medium and genre of the essay,
  • clearly and concisely summarize the main parts of the argument,
  • analyze and explain the rhetorical appeals (logos, pathos, ethos) and the style the author uses,
  • include ample evidence (direct quotes) to illustrate the analysis,
  • follow a clear organizational pattern,
  • and be written clearly and correctly.
