Being a champion wasn’t an uncommon thing for George Bersted while
he was a student-athlete at Monmouth College. In 1940, he was a member of the
golf team that won the Midwest Conference championship, and in 1941-42, he was
a member of the basketball team that brought home a MWC title. In all, Bersted
won four letters in basketball and golf at MC.
After graduating, Bersted continued to serve the college’s
athletic program by helping to revive the Graduate M Club and by leading the
fundraising effort that ultimately led to the construction of new bleachers and
a press box for the football field. He was also the public address announcer
for many years for MC football games.
Bersted worked with his wife, Helen, to establish the Warren
Achievement Center, and he served served four terms as mayor of Monmouth from
1965-1981
