"Man is what he believes"
~Anton Chekhov

Anton Chekhov has been regarded as one of the last great Russian classic writers.  He is considered a master of the short story and "one of the most original and influential modern dramatists."  His works were widely known by Russian readers for their humor and for Chekhov's ability to paint life in a vivid and true tone.  Chekhov was viewed during his lifetime as being a man of the people because of his devotion to the people in pre-revolutionary Russia.  Beverly Hahn states in her book Chekhov: A Study of the Major stories and Plays that "Chekhov is an author who must be seen whole if he is to be properly understood at all; and seeing him whole involves not merely tracing his development through the short stories, the novellas, and finally the plays, but feeling what it is that he achieves, positively, with each new turn" (4).
