Back Up a Course Site

Currently, faculty are responsible for backing up their Moodle course sites and saving copies of the backup files to their computers for safekeeping. (If you're using the Moodle gradebook, then you also should export the gradebook to Excel, and keep a backup copy of it on your computer for safekeeping. For more information, see Export the Gradebook to Excel.)

Also, please note that when a course site is backed up, the resources, activities, course settings, and student data are saved in a single .mbz (Moodle Backup Zip Archive) file. It's not possible to extract the contents of a .mbz file outside of Moodle. Therefore, you may want to keep copies of all the files that you add to your site in a folder on your computer for backup purposes.

To back up a course site:

  1. On the course home page, click the Actions (gear) icon and select Backup.
