Applications for Internships and Independent Studies planned for Summer or Fall 2005 are due April 11 to Lee McGaan  (by email)!!

Internships are an integral part of the CATA major. All CATA majors are required to complete an internship experience(or an independent study). Internships can be taken in a large variety of job settings including such areas as marketing, human relations, training and development, journalism, broadcasting, arts management, public relations.  Creative internships can also be arranged by a student in consultation with the Department.

A student who will have at least 59 semester hours by the time of the internship (and who has completed a substantial part of the CATA major) should submit an Application for internship by the midterm week of the semester preceding the desired internship. Currently, applications should be sent to Prof. Lee McGaan electronically. The CATA faculty will review the application and notify the student of their decision before the end of the semester.   The application process results in the approval of a student as eligible for a CATA sponsored internship.  It is not approval of the particular internship itself.  thus students are encouraged to apply for an internship even if they do not yet have a clear idea of where or what the internship may be.  CATA faculty are always willing to assist students in beginning a search for internship sites and they may be a useful source of leads.  You may find it useful to examine the list of Recent CATA Internships for ideas.

[In completing the application sections that ask you to list skills of potential interest to an internship site and askingyou to describe your learning goals for the internship, you may find the "List of Skills Often Developed by CATA Majors" a useful document to review and use for generating ideas about goals.]

An internship is normally for three semester hours of credit. For three credit hours we typically expect between 125 and 150 on-site hours  (about eight to ten hours per week during a typical 15 week semester).  Increased on-site hours can earn a student more credit hours;  However, students hoping to receive more than three credit hours for an internship should arrange for the additional credit in advance of beginning work at the site.

Evaluation of internships will follow general Guidelines, despite the unique nature of individual programs. These guidelines include:

  • Completing an internship Contract with your internship site supervisor and your internship faculty sponsor.  This contract should be completed within ten days of beginning the internship and submitted to the internship coordinator (with signed copies to the site supervisor and faculty sponsor).

  • Keeping a Journal (log) of daily activities and hours on-site

  • Holding periodic meetings with the faculty sponsor as defined in the contract

  • Submitting a portfolio of created/finished activities to the faculty sponsor after completion of the internship.

  • Submitting a self evaluation based on the internship experience

  • Obtaining a written evaluation from the on-site internship advisor using the CATA Internship Evaluation form

Publications and documents created, photographs of the work site, descriptions of work and other materials are often used as artifacts for CATA Professional Portfolio purposes.
