Ethics of Genetic Enhancement
Gene doping is different from other forms of doping because it doesn’t involve injecting a substance. Instead, a gene is inserted to command the body to produce substances that enhance speed, strength, and endurance. With this type of enhancement, no substances can be found in blood or urinal samples. In the past, people have been illegally doping themselves with a gene that produces EPO (erythropoietin), which produces an increase in red blood cells, increasing endurance. But this substance was able to be detected through blood testing. Scientists say that this new gene therapy will make blood testing obsolete.
