Rhetorical Analysis Essay

Evaluation Criteria     Response to Last Class's Rhetorial Analysis

Write a 2-3 page, typed rhetorical analysis of the essay "Sweatshop Oppression" by Rajeev Ravisankar (86-7) using the guidelines from chapter 4 of Practical Argument

The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate that you know how to read an argument carefully and explain how that argument operates--these are essential skills for writing your own arguments.  The most effective essays will

  • introduce the article and author of the target essay;

  • characterize the medium and genre of the target essay;

  • clearly and concisely summarize the main parts of the argument;

  • offer a clear thesis statement with your assessment of the target essay;

  • analyze and explain the rhetorical appeals (logos, pathos, ethos) and the style the author uses;

  • include ample evidence (direct quotes) to illustrate the analysis;

  • follow a clear organizational pattern for the body, (there are a number of effective ways to organize your rhetorical analysis--the argumentative flow of the target essay, point-by-point; the type of rhetorical appeals (logos, pathos, ethos); parts of good argument (thesis, reasons, support, opposing views, etc.);

  • and be written clearly and correctly.
