Ed
Greene '72 is a news and weather anchor for
KCNC-TV / CBS4,
the CBS affiliate station in Denver, CO.
He has
been in radio and television for over
thirty years in Denver. When asked
how an education in English has influenced
his life, Ed
had this to say: "doing the
weather for a large TV audience - in Denver where we can
have hundreds of thousands of viewers each night - and the
opportunity I had of filling in on the CBS Network
morning news program: The Early Show, where millions
can be watching - not only do you have to know the science
of meteorology, but you must be capable of imparting that
knowledge to your viewing audience in a non-technical,
non-scientific way that is totally understandable and will
make complete sense. That is where the English
Education becomes important. In addition to the above, you
need to speak properly, correctly and concisely to get your
point and information across to your viewer. You also have a
limited amount of time in which to do just that, so you must
possess the tools of the English language which enable you
complete these tasks in a brief but intelligent and
effortless manner. And this comes from the many facets
of English education. Not only the standard lessons of
the language, but also by reading all sorts of different
books and seeing and understanding how others use the
language. The more you are able to absorb from a
variety of sources simply enhances your everyday performance
as well as the one relating to your employment."

 |
Mike
Mimnaugh '71
heads
the Human Resources Department at Sony Corporation of
America. He explains that "Simply
stated, for me the English Department curriculum offered the
opportunity to explore the world through literature.
I could read something of a contemporary nature or go
back in time to your area of specialty…the choice was
mine…that was then and remains today appealing in one’s
educational process. Secondly, the faculty members within
the Department engaged in and promoted lively debates on
characters, themes, methods, motives etc. It was terrific,
and the subject of business could wait until later in one’s
life." |

|
|
Patty
(Wilson) McCoy '67 taught
secondary English for five years
after graduation, including two
for the DOD (U.S. dependents) in Okinawa. After that,
she had a career in property /
casualty insurance claims. When she
retired, she was a claim
litigation specialist, a position she "loved
and was able to achieve partly because of my English
language skills, in this case the ability to communicate
cogently, plainly and briefly(!) in an industry not
particularly known for that!
But I could also read and decipher complex policy language
-- most likely a result of my studies in Middle English
literature." After
her retirement, she has organized her graduating high school
class including coordinating their 40th reunion and sending
out a biannual newsletter.
Patty has
had other adventures: "In the 80's, my husband and I built a schooner, on
which we were going to sail away forever. We left in '87,
traveled / lived (on the boat) down the west coasts of
Mexico and Central America. Stopped in Panama in late '89 to
work, make some money to head to the South Pacific. I worked
for the Public Affairs office at the US Naval Station,
writing award applications and -- a lot more fun -- columns
about 'doings' at the station for the Tropic Times, the
American language newspaper in 'the zone.' We were there for
'Operation Just Cause,' the American action that took out
Noriega. That first night, Apache helicopters flew about
only a hundred feet above our masts -- without lights. The
second day, the Navy sent a truck to pick me up (we couldn't
travel anywhere on our own,) to spend several days / nights
at the Station riding herd on the media (a mind-boggling
challenge).
She
explains her happiest (academic) memories at
Monmouth: "The semester I
spent studying Renaissance literature and history / working
at the Newberry Library on the near north side in Chicago --
there were about 12 of us there, from various schools in the
conference.... It was wonderful.
And on the same par: Adele Kennedy's senior poetry seminar
(held in her home,) Jeremy McNamara's Shakespeare classes,
Rev Weeks' comparative religion class, and Tom Fernandez's
speech classes (I think I took every class he taught...)." |
|

Janet Fishburn '58 worked as a director of Christian
Education and
had three daughters. In 1970
she enrolled in an American
Religious Studies program at Penn State and became a Ph.D.
in that field in 1978. The Rev. Dr.
Janet Fishburn
was subsequently a seminary
professor in American church history and Christian education
for seventeen years.
She speaks of the influence of her undergraduate English
degree from Monmouth College: "Among the English
courses that influenced my doctoral dissertation and
subsequent research were two courses in Victorian Studies
--Victorian poetry and Victorian prose-- taught by Eva
Cleveland. My dissertation was a study of the social gospel
movement set in Victorian America. It was the influence of
Garvin Davenport in history that led me to recognize that
historians must attend to culture and context and that
context includes religion, art and architecture."
She states, "My strong liberal arts background from
Monmouth College set me up for life." She
adds, "Thank you, Monmouth College."
|
|
John Niblock '58 explains that he has used his
work in Speech and English all of his career:
as a newspaper reporter; Army adult education
English teacher; college PR type; writer and editor
for the Southern Regional Education Board, regional
education laboratory, and Learning Institute of
North Carolina; and administrator of several
nonprofits. John says that "Even
now, as a septuagenarian, I think
"it is the spelling, not the years, I am
uncertain about".
Now, as Editor and Advertising Sales Manager with
The Produce News, he writes and edits a
monthly tabloid, Floral Marketing, which is
a supplement to The Produce News. Each
month, John produces about 30 articles and attends
several trade shows. Living in Florida, and working
for this Oradell, New Jersey publication requires
lots of work via phone and email. John values
the liberal arts education he received at Monmouth
College. Not only did it allow him employment
in a field that didn't exist when he graduated, but,
has also provided a job he enjoys now, over fifty
years later. For fun,
he has written a one-act play, a short
story, and two unpublished novels.
"Monmouth gave me a rounded, liberal education
that allowed me to have a rich and varied career.
Thank you, Monmouth!"

Hank
McNally '53
went from graduation to Fort Sam Houston as a medic during
the Korean War in a training company on injured
and wounded evacuations, that doubled as a marching band, as
an oboist. He wrote copy for
the Army radio station for a show called "Club Cutup," which
primarily played soft jazz for the Brook Army Hospital
patients, with some character copy to provide some humor
(hopefully, he says) to the
soldiers who were hospitalized.
After leaving the Korean conflict, Hank
went to New York City to study theatre at The
American Academy of Dramatic Arts (and later the Hagen/Berghoff
Studio). He did a walk on role for
the Equity Library Theatre, and a couple of seasons of
summer stock. While
assistant technical director for the
Alley Theatre in Houston, he met
Joyce Randall, a former graduate student at Indiana
University, and an aspiring actress and director
who he eventually married. He went to Denver
and "Thanks to the major in
English," he
picked up a job doing advertising and sales promotion for a
mutual fund company in Denver. He credits
the English major for his professional opportunities and
success: "the English major, combined with other
experience, got me a job as Director of Advertising and
Sales Promotion for the mutual fund branch of American
General Insurance Company." He and his
wife Joyce started a theatre, The Company Onstage,
in Houston. The Company Onstage celebrate their 30th season this
year. |

Shannon
(Reed) Emmons '50 has an MA in Counseling and is now
retired and living in
Sierra Vista, AZ.
She thanks Professor Owens for her writing skills, and
explains: "My
advisor in graduate school assured me he always read my
papers first because it was such joy to find a student who
could write a simple declarative sentence which always made
sense and occasionally made him laugh." |

Ruth
(Forsythe) Robinson '50 received an MA in
Special Education
from San Diego State University; she is a retired Resource
Specialist. In retirement, she is active in AAUW and church
activities and she is busy with her grandkids and four
great-grandkids. She says that she has two
granddaughters in college and she "wish[es] they were at
Monmouth." She adds, "A major in English gave me a
great background for teaching, plus some writing skills that
came in handy for IEPs! I remember fondly Dr. Owen's
love of Browning, and Berniece Fox' talent for teaching
creative writing." |
