This two-person stage play has
always seemed to attract married acting couples, a tradition
established by the play's first Broadway stars Hume Cronyn and
Jessica Tandy. The film version featured Rex Harrison and Lilli
Palmer, who were man and wife at the time. The story traces the
history of a marriage from the wedding night in 1890 to move-out day in the 1920s; all crucial scenes are acted out in the
couple's boudoir, near the fourposter bed they'd received as a
wedding present. A musical version of The Fourposter titled
I Do I Do opened on Broadway in 1966, breaking precedent by
starring Mary Martin and Robert Preston, who were happily married
but not to each other.

In the late 1800s, Russia’s preeminent
literary doctor, Anton Chekhov, wrote humorous newspaper
articles to pay for medical school. Neil Simon, Broadway’s master of
comedy, elegantly weaves eight of
Chekhov’s stories into a laugh-out-loud experience complete with
tricky con artists, ridiculous slapstick,
and heartwarming musical numbers.

Study Guide
This drama is one
of the great comedy Shakespeare plays. Viola, cross dresses and
takes the man's name of Cesario. Viola enters the service of the
Duke of Illyria, Orsino. Orsino longs for the love of a neighbouring
countess. Viola (Cesario) then falls in love with Orsino. To add to
the farce Viola's (Cesario) identical twin, Sebastian arrives on the
scene. Living in Olivia’s household is her uncle, Sir Toby Belch, a
merry character. The steward of the household is the conceited
Malvolio. The plot illustrates jealousy, mistaken Identity,
cross-dressing and features fights and duels. In the end Sebastian
and Olivia fall in love and marry. Orsino realises that it is Viola
that he loves and she agrees to marry him. Sir Toby Belch and Maria
also decide to marry! Twelfth Night ends and everyone, except
Malvolio, is happy and Shakespeare speaks of the madness of love.
